Acoustics in everyday life
Noise is a constant companion in our modern society.
Whether at the workplace, in schools, while shopping, in public facilities, or at home—acoustic fabrics are always a smart choice. Many new buildings suffer from reverberation due to hard, reflective surfaces such as glass, concrete, or tiles. Sound waves are reflected by these surfaces and bounce back into the room.
Such noise levels are burdensome and disrupt concentration. The resulting continuous stress can also lead to health impairments. To counteract these effects, designers and engineers rely on various solutions to improve room acoustics.
Acoustic sails made from specialized technical textiles
Thanks to flexible designs and versatile applications, acoustic fabrics are increasingly being integrated as visual design elements in building architecture.
Acoustic ceiling sails are suspended from the ceiling and are often part of the building’s lighting concept. Walls are ideal for installing digitally printed acoustic panels. Room dividers also provide sound insulation while additionally separating workstations from one another.
Used individually or in combination, these elements provide sound absorption to create pleasant room acoustics.
As a beneficial side effect, the textiles serve as print substrates for customized lighting and color concepts. In the latest approaches, backlit surfaces are used with controlled color designs to illuminate rooms in ways that, for example, boost concentration or create a calming effect.
Fire performance
In addition to acoustic properties, the use of textiles in publicly accessible spaces typically requires flame-retardant or even non-combustible materials. Here, textiles are tested according to the DIN 13501 or DIN 4102 standards.
Fire class B1 denotes a flame-retardant material, and A2 is non-combustible.
Products
Stottrop Textil GmbH has been offering a selection of textiles that meet these requirements for more than 14 years. Whether freely suspended, tensioned in frames, used as advertising media, or as sculptural elements—light-acoustic sails create a subdued room atmosphere combined with sophisticated architecture.
